Georgia or more properly Sakartvelo is somewhere I’ve wanted to visit for years. But as I can’t travel physically, I’ll do so through food & have started learning some of their dishes. Khmeli-suneli is one of the more popular blends from there & translated to “dried spices”
Opening the jar reminds me of gathering hay in wild meadows full of herbs. That sweet grassy scent with so many other flowery, spicy smells mixed in with a freshness from the hyssop & mint. This delicate riot transfers to the mouth when tasting, & it leaves a sweetness on the lips. Looking through the ingredients, I can’t place where the sweetness comes from, but it’s welcome.
It’s excellent on fresh summer vegetables & plays well with lighter meats & fish; elevating their delicate flavour rather than masking.
For its first outing, I stuck to a simple Georgian spiced chicken and roasted potatoes with a walnut & yogurt sauce. Had to have the crowd pleasing khachapuri breads as a side. The Khmeli-suneli was equally good on the cheesy/eggy bread. The spices smell great, emanating from a hot oven & I think I’ve only just started my journey with this mix.
